حَجَبَتُI shut out شُعَاعَrays الشَّمْسِthe sun فَاحتَرَقَتْso she burned جَوًىwith longing
وَمَعَand with العَشيَّةِthe evening أَقبلَتْshe came forward تَتطفَّلُintruding uninvited
I shut out the sun's rays, and she burned with longing.
And with evening she came, intruding uninvited.
حتىَّso much so that لَقدْindeed رَقَّtook pity النَّسِيمُthe breeze لهاon her وَقَدْand already

So much so that the breeze took pity on her, for she had
been tinged with the pallor of one rebuffed and ashamed.
فَثَنىso it bent لهاfor her الأَغْصانَthe branches فانفَرَجَتْand so opened لهاfor her

So it bent the branches for her, and there opened for her
paths, and through them she gained access.

Then she drew near; departure distressed her, so she bade farewell,
And hers was the backward glance of one who wished not to leave.

Until, when the sun's eyelid grew drowsy,
and a kohl-dark eye gazed out from the darkness,
زارَvisited الحَبِيبُthe beloved فَكأَنَّso it was as though يَوميmy day والدُّجَىand the night's darkness

the beloved visited, and it was as though my day and the dark night
were both white-blazed and white-stockinged.
