أَرَحْتُكَI relieved you واستَرَحْتُand I found relief مِنfrom المَلامِreproach
وَمِنand from عَذْلٍrebuke يُطِيلُprolongs مَدَىthe duration of الكَلامِthe talk
I relieved you, and found relief from reproach,
I let you go and rested from blame,
and from rebuke that draws out the talk.
And from reproach that prolongs discourse.
وَكُنتُand I was أُجِيدُI excel at عَشْقَloving الظَّبْيthe gazelle أَلْمَىdark-lipped
سَقِيمَlanguid المُقْلَتينِboth eyes بِلاwithout سَقامِillness
And I excelled at loving the dark-lipped gazelle,
And I used to love the gazelle's love,
languid in both eyes, yet free of illness.
The sick-eyed one, without sickness.
تَقولُyou say أَفَرَّhas he fled? منfrom رِضوانَRidwan أَمْor ذاthis one
لهُhe has حُسْنٌbeauty سِوَىother than حُسْنِthe beauty of الأَنامِhumankind
You say, 'Has he fled from Ridwan, or does this one
You say, did he flee from Rida's pleasure,
have beauty unlike the beauty of humankind?'
Or does he have beauty other than people's beauty?
فَماso not تَمَّbecame complete الجَمالُbeauty لِغَيْرِfor anyone other than هذاthis one
ولاnor وأَبيكَby your father لِلقمرِfor the moon التَّمامِfull
For beauty is complete in none but this one,
Beauty was never complete for other than him,
not even, by your father, in the full moon.
By your father, or for the full moon.
وَلَيلَةَand one night زارَنيhe visited me واللَّيلُwhile the night مُلْقٍcasting
علىover الآفاقِthe horizons أَرْدِيَةَcloaks الظَّلامِof darkness
And one night he visited me, while night was casting
And the night he visited me and the night spread
cloaks of darkness over the horizons.
On the horizons the blankets of darkness,
وَكَادَand almost الصُّبحُdawn لاnot يَبدوappears حَياءًout of shyness
فَأَبداهُso he revealed it بِماwith what تَحتَbeneath اللِّثامِthe veil
And dawn almost failed to appear out of shyness,
And morning was shy to appear,
so he revealed it with what lay beneath the veil.
So he made it appear with what's under the veil.
هُمُthey قالواsaid المُدامُwine رُضابُsaliva فِيهِof his mouth
وَمَنand who أَعطاكَgave you ياO كَأْسَcup of المُدامِwine
They said, 'Wine is the saliva of his mouth.'
They said wine is forbidden, O cup of wine,
And who gave it to you, O cup of wine?
And who gave you, O cup of wine?
