قَدْindeed كِدْتُI nearly أَقْطَعُspend يَومَthe day of عِيدِىmy Eid طَاوِياًon an empty stomach
وأَعِيشُand I live دُونَunlike النَّاسِother people بالتَّسبيحِon glorifying God
I nearly spent my Eid day on an empty stomach,
I almost decided to retire grieving on my birthday,
living, unlike others, on glorifying God,
And live without people glorifying God,
وَأُرِيقُand I spill مِنout of نَدَميmy remorse دَميmy blood إذْas تنقضيcome to an end
أَيَامُdays of تَشْريقٍTashriq (days after Eid al-Adha) بِلاwithout تَشرِيحِcarving meat
and spilling my blood in remorse at the passing
And shed my blood in regret when days of celebration pass
of the days of Tashriq, with no meat being carved.
Without any cheer.
وَسَرَتْand wafted أَرائحُaromas مِنfrom شَرَائحِslices of meat جِيرَةٍneighbors

And aromas wafted from the neighbors’ slices of meat,
And winds blew from slices of a neighboring wall,
tormenting Siraj, who was downwind—
Disturbing a lamp that was under the wind.

If not for Ibn Abd al-Zahir al-Fatih, who
readily brought me my gifts from his bounty.
Came to me humbly with open arms.
