How splendid is your pool, grown beautiful

Through gazing at your face when you smile.

    وَنُجومُها أَضيافُهُ وَهُمُ

    It mirrors the sky, and its water is a twilight glow;

And its stars are twilight’s guests—and they...

And it is as though the two lions had frozen

From fear of your might when you take vengeance.

And the water from this one’s mouth and that one’s resembles

Two unsheathed swords—and swords are blood.

And polo mallets have been cast in silver

For the water; steady rains fall short of their ascent.

And it is as though our days were robes

Spread out, with this day of yours their embroidered stripe.
