Help! Fasting has already devoured my clothes,

and I fear my resentment will devour my reward.

I have sold what I once bought; the worst of pains

is selling my robes in winter.

All this, while its armies have assailed me,

    trailing along, troop upon troop.

So inwardly I suffer the ache of emptiness, and outwardly

the ache of the air—so do not ask what ails me.

Yet worse than this is my appeal, proclaimed aloud,

for the emir's bounty, yet no answer comes back to me.
