Had al-Hutay’ah not satirized me, he would have said—and
in truth, no blame or shame would fall upon him:
دَعِabandon المَكارمَnoble deeds لَمْdid not تَرْحَلْyou journey لِبُغيتِهاin pursuit of them
دَعِ المَكارمَ لَمْ تَرْحَلْ لِبُغيتِها
وابعُدْand keep away فإنكَfor indeed you أَنتَyou الجائعُthe hungry one العَارِيthe naked one
وابعُدْ فإنكَ أَنتَ الجائعُ العَارِي
Abandon noble deeds; you have not journeyed in pursuit of them.
And keep away, for you yourself are hungry and naked.
