وَقَالُوا امْدَحْ فُلانَ الدِّي

وَقَالُوا امْدَحْ فُلانَ الدِّي

نِ فَهْوَ اليومَ مَقْصُودُ

نِ فَهْوَ اليومَ مَقْصُودُ

And they said, “Praise so-and-so al-Dī—

They said praise so-and-so's religion, for today it is sought after

—n, for today he is sought after;

And there's no harm in that, I say

وَمَافي ذاكَ مِنَ بأْسٍ

وَمَافي ذاكَ مِنَ بأْسٍ

فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ وَلا جُودُ

فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ وَلا جُودُ

and there is no harm in that.”

But my soul did not incline to generosity in this way

So I said to them, “Nor any generosity.”
