وَيَومَand on a day سَمُومٍscorching wind خِلْتُI imagined أَنَّthat نَسِيَمهُits breeze
وَيَومَ سَمُومٍ خِلْتُ أَنَّ نَسِيَمهُ
ذَواتُcreatures bearing سُمُومٍvenoms لِلقلوبِto hearts لَوَاذِغُstinging
ذَواتُ سُمُومٍ لِلقلوبِ لَوَاذِغُ
And on a day of scorching wind, I imagined its breeze
And on a poisonous day, I thought its breeze
Was venomous creatures stinging hearts.
Was a cure for hearts, a soothing balm.
ظَلَلْتُI spent the day بهِduring it أشكُوI complain مُعَالَجَةَstruggling with الصَّدَىthirst
ظَلَلْتُ بهِ أشكُو مُعَالَجَةَ الصَّدَى
وَكُوزِيand my jug مَلآنٌfull وَمائيَand my water فَارِغُempty
وَكُوزِي مَلآنٌ وَمائيَ فَارِغُ
All that day I complained of battling thirst,
I complained to it of the harshness of Fate;
While my jug was full and my water empty.
My glass was full, but life was parched.
