وَلَمْand did not أَدْرِI know إلاexcept عِندَat أَخذِيَmy taking مَضْجَعيmy bed
وَقَدand already سَدَّbarred لَيليmy night دُونَshort of أَبوابِكَyour doors السُّبْلاthe paths
And I did not realize until I took to my bed,
When my night had barred the paths to your doors.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أُقاسيenduring لَيلَةًa night نَابِغيَّةًlike al-Nabighah's
بِهاin it النَّوْمُsleep لَمْdid not يَعقِدْbind جُفُونيmy eyelids ولاnor خَلَّىrelease
So I spent the night enduring a night like al-Nabighah's,
In which sleep neither bound my eyelids nor released them.
فَدَعْso let مُقلتيmy eye تَلْقَىmeet الرَّدَىdeath مُطمئِنةًat peace
فقدfor indeed جَعَلتْit has made بِالسُّهْدِwith sleeplessness والدَّمعِand tears ليfor me شُغْلاan occupation
So let my eye meet death at peace,
For it has kept me occupied with sleeplessness and tears.
