جَرَتْ مِن َبَعدِ سَاداتي أُمُورٌ

جَرَتْ مِن َبَعدِ سَاداتي أُمُورٌ

غَدَتْ عَجَباً تُسَطَّرُ في الأَنامِ

غَدَتْ عَجَباً تُسَطَّرُ في الأَنامِ

After my masters, things came to pass;

After my masters have passed away, things

They became a marvel, recorded among humankind.

Have become wondrous, to be written among people.

فَما غَلَتِ البَطالةُ لي لأَنّي

فَما غَلَتِ البَطالةُ لي لأَنّي

عَرَفْتُ بها الكِرامَ مِن اللِّئَامِ

عَرَفْتُ بها الكِرامَ مِن اللِّئَامِ

So idleness did not cost me dearly, for I

Yet idleness has not tempted me, for through it

Learned through it to tell the noble from the base.

I’ve known the noble from the vile.
