A firm resolve to which success clings
among creatures with claws and creatures with wings:
Between claw and wing it springs

From cheetahs and from falcons freed
by their goal in their morning departure and evening return.
It charged headlong, nothing heeding

Of blood till cheeks with shame were lead

He schooled the horses—one day in a hunt he pursued,
He trained his steed for hunting day
and another day in what you call the business of combat.
And discipline for battle's fray

Lean steeds: lightning blazes beneath their whip,
Afire, his whip makes lightning play
and the raging winds complain of exhaustion.
As the tired horses pant and bray

From oryx, from wild ass and gazelle,

their wailing lingered long throughout the regions.
Their wails echo from mountain high
