    You bestowed the finest gifts, O best of those tracing their descent

    To the finest desert-dweller or the finest townsman,

    With a piece cut in the shape of a tongue, as lovely

    At its beginnings as it is at its ends.

    Its two faces differ, yet their contrast takes

    The place of harmony in the eyes of the discerning.

    وأما الذي من تحتها وجْهُ شاعر

    As for the one on top, it is a lover’s face;

    And as for the one beneath, it is a poet’s face.
