حصلتُ مِنْ ليلى على ذكرِها

حصلتُ مِنْ ليلى على ذكرِها

وحبسيَ النفس على ضُرِّها

وحبسيَ النفس على ضُرِّها

What I have of Layla is her memory,

I gained from Layla a mention of her,

and my keeping my soul bound to its suffering.

And my soul is imprisoned by her harm.

يا عيدَنا أوَّلَ عيدٍ أتى

فقدتُ ليلى فيه من خِدْرِها

O our feast day, the first feast day to come

Oh our feast, the first feast that came,

on which I found Layla missing from her secluded chamber.

I lost Layla in it from her room.

بُوركَ للأمّةٍ في عيدها

بُوركَ للأمّةٍ في عيدها

فليس أمري فيه من أمرها

فليس أمري فيه من أمرها

May the community be blessed on its feast day,

Blessings to the nation in its feast,

for my lot that day is not theirs.

But my matter in it is not of its matter.

عادوا من العيدِ إلى دورِهمْ

عادوا من العيدِ إلى دورِهمْ

وعدتْ من عيدي إلى قبرها

وعدتْ من عيدي إلى قبرها

They returned from the feast to their homes,
