    We drank in Baʿādhīn,

    Out on those open grounds,

    To the laughter of nightingales,

    To the lament of turtledoves,

    To the beating of lattice screens,

    And the trilling of woodpigeons,

    Beside the radiance of blossoms,

    Colored in the most delicate hues:

    Like the tails of peacocks,

    Like the collars of kharāmīn birds,

    Like the necks of francolins,

    And the eyes of curlews.

    We drank—come, look

    At drinking in all its varieties:

    At the drinking of ifrits,

    At the drinking of devils!

    Sometimes from mortars,

    And sometimes from basins.

    Then, when drunkenness began to move

    Us with the gait of chess viziers,

    We swayed and writhed,

    Writhing like serpents.

    We rose and made merry

    With stirring music and melody,

    With clapping and rhythm,

    Like the rhythms of lute-frets,

    And dancing that seized the eye,

    With movement and stillness,

    مَ أطرافَ السكاكين

    As though we were setting our feet

    On the tips of knives;

    As though, when we formed a circle,

    We were people linked with iron rings.

    Then we offered greetings, when we had fulfilled

    The duties of that hour.

    We jostled one another toward the pool,

    From atop the raised benches,

    And swam and floundered

    Like the flailing of madmen.

    We went off wearing two perfumes:

    Saffron perfume and mud.

    So tell of a battle that surpassed

    The Battle of Ṣiffīn!

    O, the good fortune of a youth

    Among fortunate youths!

    On this one, a crown of roses, and

    On that one, a crown of eglantine.

    We devoted ourselves to emptying

    The wine jars and the purses.

    And our cupbearer, when asked for drink,

    Was like the foremost of landowners:

    A youth—no, rather a girl who mixes

    Sternness with gentleness.

    Hers is the might of sultans,

    And mine the abasement of the poor.

    O you who are my garden,

    And the garden of gardens,

    And O you who are my sweet basil,

    And the basil of all fragrant herbs,

    And O ambergris of India,

    And O musk of Dārīn,

    And O beauty of Nīsān,

    And O gentleness of Tishrīn,

    And O nightingale, O peacock—

    Rather, O duck of China!

    And O Eid al-Fitr, and O Eid al-Adha,

    And O Palm Sunday feast!

    تُغَنِّيني فَتُغنيني

    You greet me, and so revive me;

    You sing to me, and so enrich me;

    وأدعو فتلبيني

    And I appear, and you welcome me;

    And I call, and you answer me.

    O sorcerer, how often you bewitch

    Me with a glance, and charm me with spells!

    And O slayer, how often you kill

    Me with love, and give me life!

    You call me 'the wayward one,'

    Yet your glances lead me astray.

    And nothing has made my names lovely

    Except what you call me.

    You have shown versatility in character,

    In every variety:

    فديوانُ الدواوين

    As for eloquence,

    You are the anthology of anthologies;

    فمعيارِ الموازين

    And as for acts of worship,

    The standard of all balances;

    And as for roguery,

    The devil of all devils.

    نِ منه والأساطين

    So, by the monastery and its corners,

    And its columns;

    حِ لا بلْ بالقرابين

    And by the sanctuary and the altar—

    No, rather, by the offerings;

    وإِيقادِ الكوانين

    And by the crosses and the draperies,

    And the lighting of braziers;

    ن فيه من تَرابين

    And by Easter, and whatever is thrust

    Forth there of tarābīn;

    ومن غيدٍ ومن عِين

    And by the slender-waisted who attend,

    The graceful and the wide-eyed;

    وبعض في الخَفاتين

    Some are in long tunics,

    And some in caftans;

    على كُثبانِ يبرين

    And they have tied their girdles

    Around the dunes of Yabrīn;

    بتطريبٍ وتلحين

    And by the scripture that is read

    With melodious chanting and intonation;

    وأصنافِ القوانين

    And the kinds of sacred laws,

    And the kinds of canons;

    فِ منهم والرهابين

    And by the patriarch and the bishop

    Among them, and the monks;

    ومن في طورِ سينين

    And those on Mount Tabor,

    And those on Mount Sinai;

    وأصحابِ العثابين

    And the bearers of staffs,

    And the bearers of ʿathābīn;

    Wearers of black hooded cloaks

    Over black kanānīn:

    Are you keeping the covenant

    Of love for me, as Saʿnīn kept it,

    So that I grow in love—or are you

    False to me, with Shāhīn’s treachery?

    معاذَ الله في الدين

    And I love nothing forbidden—no;

    God forbid, in matters of faith!

    And no one is accursed except one

    Who holds the views of the accursed.
