They said, “We have a date palm, and already in blossom

is our palm; so wait patiently for its fruit.”

Until, when its blossoms became green dates,

they said, “Await the ripening of its firm, colored dates.”

Until, when its firm dates became soft and ripe,

they carried off its fruit clusters, every last one.

May I be rid of it—a palm like the palm of ʿUr-

qūb—and of a tale like its tale!
