The rose claimed that it was more splendid

Than all the blossoms and fragrant herbs.

Then the eyes of the tender narcissus answered it

With abasement and humiliation in their words:

Which is lovelier: a rosy blush, or the eye

Of a gazelle with languid eyelids?

Or then what does the cheek hope to gain by its redness

    If it has no eyes?

So the rose grew proud, then said in reply,

With a pleasing analogy and clear expression:

Indeed, the roses of the cheeks are lovelier than

    An eye yellowed by jaundice.
