The finest tools I have made ready—

and through them my comrades have gained lasting plenty—

are daughters of a smith who reached the height of skill,

the size of a shrike's talons,

or like the half-rings of mail you have seen.

They have points bent at their tips,

like vipers' fangs, and sharper still,

    bearing baleful bait, baleful indeed.

When rigged, they are tied to horses' tail-hairs,

    tightly twisted like palm-fiber cord,

fastened to the tips of reeds made ready,

with solid shafts and closely spaced nodes.

We turned aside with them where no one had turned,

into willow shade, cool above us,

on the bank of a river clad in mail of foam.

Then their hands were given free play,

and never ceased, now letting out, now drawing taut,

until they called to one another, 'Enough fish, enough!'

Then we sent forth a thousand eyes in one body,

and they came to us with their equals in number:

a thousand fish, white as hail,

clothed in dirhams that are never assayed.

Such is sustenance: ebb and flow.

So praise be to the Guardian, the Unique One, the Eternal Refuge.
