ترك الظاعنون قلبي بلا قلبٍ

وعيني عيناً من الهملان

وعيني عيناً من الهملان

The departing ones left my heart without a heart,

The wanderers left my heart heartless

and my eye a spring of flowing tears.

And my eyes as eyes filled with tears

وإذا لم تَفِضْ دماً سحائبُ أجفاني

وإذا لم تَفِضْ دماً سحائبُ أجفاني

على إِثرهمْ فما أَجفاني

على إِثرهمْ فما أَجفاني

And if the clouds of my eyelids do not pour forth blood

And if my eyelids do not shed blood

in their wake, then how hard-hearted I am!

In their aftermath, then they are not my eyelids

ووراء الخدور أحسنُ خلقِ

ووراء الخدور أحسنُ خلقِ

الله خلقاً عارٍ من الإحسان

الله خلقاً عارٍ من الإحسان

And behind the veils is the fairest of the creatures

And behind the cheeks is the best of God's creations

of God in form, yet bereft of kindness.

That God created bare of kindness

حلَّ في ناظري فإن فتشوه

حلَّ في ناظري فإن فتشوه

كان ذاك الإنسانُ في إِنساني

كان ذاك الإنسانُ في إِنساني

He has settled in my eye; so if they searched it,

Settled in my eyes, so if they search it

that human being would be in the pupil of my eye.

That human was in my humanity
