كثرة المدح بيننا يا أبا الفض

ل استعيرت من قلة الأشغال

The abundance of praise between us, O Abu al-Faḍl,

The excess of praise amongst us, O Father of Excellence

is borrowed from having little to do.

I borrowed due to lack of work

نحن في قبضة السو فلا هجو

نحن في قبضة السو فلا هجو

صدود ولا مديح وصال

صدود ولا مديح وصال

We are in evil’s grip, so there is no satire

We are in the grip of adversity, so no satire

of estrangement, nor praise of union.

Nor praise or union

فإذا ما سوق الاجادة لم ينف

فإذا ما سوق الاجادة لم ينف

ق أقام المردان سوق البدال

ق أقام المردان سوق البدال

So when the market for excellence does not thrive,

So if the market of excellence did not spend

the beardless youths set up a market for barter.

The substitutes established the market of alternatives
