قُلْsay لِطَيفٍto an apparition سَرَىtraveled by night فَحَيَّاand then greeted المطِيَّاthe mounts
مُغْرَماًenamored بيof me وكانَand was قبلُbefore خَلِيَّاfree of love
Say to an apparition that traveled by night and greeted the mounts,
Tell a gentle one who walked with grace and greeted the mounts,
Enamored of me, though once free of love:
Enamored with me though once aloof and distant,
هَكّذاthus كُلَّماwhenever مَضَىpassed اللَّيلُthe night تَمْضيyou depart
ليتَif only ذاthis اللَّيْلَthe night لاnot يُطِيقُis able to مُضِيَّاpass
Thus, whenever the night passes, you depart.
Thus whenever the night passes the night goes by,
If only this night could not pass!
Would that this night could not bear to pass,
كُلَّماwhenever زُرتِyou visited زورةًa visit فيin خَفاءٍsecrecy
وأَرىand I see البَدرَthe full moon لاnot يكونُis خَفِيَّاhidden
Whenever you pay a visit in secret—
Whenever you pay a veiled visit in secrecy
And I see that the full moon cannot be hidden—
And I see the moon that cannot be hidden,
نَبَّهَalerted الطِّيبُthe perfume والحُلِيُّand the jewelry عليناto our presence
فَاهْجُريso forsake الطّيبَthe perfume طِيبَهاher/its fragrance والحُلِيّاand the jewelry
Perfume and jewelry alert others to our presence.
The perfume and jewelry reminded us,
So forsake perfume—its fragrance—and jewelry.
So leave the perfume its scent and the jewelry.
