والبخل والشحُّ والإفراطُ والسَّرفُ
Rebuff, abandonment, turning away, and haughtiness,
Rejection, estrangement, aloofness, pride
and stinginess, avarice, excess, and extravagance.
Stinginess, miserliness, excess, extravagance

فليس تَثني ولا تُلوي ولا تَعف
Remoteness, parting, and distance—you have grown obsessed with them;
You have spoken of estrangement, distance, separation
so you neither turn back nor turn aside nor pardon.
You do not relent, bend, or pardon

There is no kind of estrangement you know
There remains no kind of estrangement you don't know
but you have a share of it, my lord.
In all of them, my lord, you stand supreme

Someone described Abu Bakr's traits in love

I said: You have gleaned what I would describe

If the sun had a share of his traits—
If the sun had but a fraction of his qualities

People would wish for its eclipse, of a thousand parts, one

While life is pleasant, and joy is renewed

Wilt on the branches, before they can be plucked
