Quwayq, when it scents the winter wind,

    Displays astonishing conceit and pride,

And matches the Tigris, the Nile, and the

Euphrates in splendor, beauty, and sweetness.

And if summer comes, you see it

    Abased, insignificant, sorrowful, and gloomy.

When the frogs call out to it:

    “Quwayq! Quwayq!”—it refuses to answer.

So they shelter in its remnants, which are clad

In a fresh robe of summer algae.

And a locust walks through it, so

Its legs scarcely disappear from sight.
