Our age, as you have known it, is an age of hardship.

How many drowned men I see in its seas!

What think you of Time—how it has brought about among us

two lovers' partnership in one beloved?

So he is two halves, right and left,

like the split hem of an outer robe.

One ranks him with the Pleiades; the other

holds him to be Capella's brother.

Both are distraught by the burning anguish of affection,

each seeing his eggs as the vulture's eggs.

They sanction the fair division of intimacy,

and approve of taking their due.

They never tire of weighing out kisses,

nor weary of measuring out saliva.

Never did this one cross the other without

the tips of their penises meeting along the way.

Never before this had my two eyes seen—

or would they see—two archers inside an arrow-nock.

Thus, in their love for him, one is near

in love's dwelling places, and the other far away.

One is like a counter of waves when he speaks of passionate love,

and the other like someone blowing into a horn.
