    distant from me, even if the

    dwellings do not bring me near you.

    My soul pictured you for me, since

    I could not endure being apart from you.

    And what showed you to me as you are

    was longing for you and remembrance.

    وَيَثْنِيها الجوار

    a kinship that affection draws close,

    and neighborliness strengthens;

    زَجُ بالماءِ العُقار

    and a mingling, just as

    wine is mingled with water;

    and a purity that was never

    hidden—can daylight be hidden?

    O Abu Bakr, what a lineage,

    Yours is the excellence, and I do not

    deal unjustly; injustice is a disgrace.

    I have been overwhelmed by favors of

    yours—seas upon seas.

    What you have bestowed on me cannot be hidden from

    the eyes of people.

    So if I fail to offer proper

    thanks, then say, 'This is a donkey.'

    And you were clothed in honor by one whose least

    quality is glory:

    دُ وَرَدَّاهُ الوقار

    a father girded by

    glory and robed by dignity;

    تِ إذا ضلَّ التجار

    one who speeds along the paths of

    commerce when merchants lose their way;

    an axis around which has revolved

    the revolving axis of glory.

    O sons of Asim, may rain pour generously

    upon you, despite the distance, from clouds like pregnant she-camels.

    We do not care, so long as you

    remain, whom ruin befalls.
