O you who reproach me for being a poet,

You have reproached me for nobility of character.

Do not be hasty; abandon foolish reproach,

For poetry is lovers' finest adornment.

Did you not know that it holds virtues—

Companionship for the lonely, and comfort for the yearning,

And eloquence that brightens minds, and wisdom

    Ceaselessly spread across the horizons?

    If poetry offered nothing beyond

Praise of union or censure of parting,

Or a portrait of a face like yours, which goes on

Forever outshining the sun in radiance,

Or the portrayal of a drinking companion who stays at a gathering,

Neither bored with it nor false in friendship,

Or the sound of a lute that captivates you with its resonance,

While wine is displayed in the cupbearer's palm...

And it is enough for you that poetry holds marvels,

That remain forever necklaces about the neck.

And with it one is consoled on every day of parting,

And with it one is congratulated on every day of reunion.
