أياO دُلْبَةَplane tree الغربيِّal-Gharbi أفردكِhas left you alone الدهرtime
سقىmay water الدُّلْبَthe plane trees دُلْبَthe plane trees الغربِal-Gharb منfor أجلكِyour sake القَطْرrain
O plane tree of al-Gharbi, time has left you alone.
O little turtledove of the west, how fate has singled you out!
May rain water the plane trees—the plane trees of al-Gharb—for your sake.
It watered your fellow turtledove with drops for your sake.
فتاتينtwo maidens عذراوينtwo virgins أختينtwo sisters كنتماyou two were
قَضَىdecreed الأمرَthe fate فيconcerning إِحداكماone of you two مَنْthe one who لهُto him الأَمْرcommand
Two virgin maidens, two sisters, you were.
We were two chaste sisters, O my sister!
He who holds command decreed the fate of one of you.
But the one in authority has ruled for one of us.
كلاناboth of us مَحَتْerased آثارَthe traces واحدِهِhis one companion النَّوىseparation
فليسso there is not لهof him عينٌa form تُحَسُّthat can be sensed ولاnor أثْرa trace
For each of us, separation has erased our companion's traces.
We both have erased the traces, no trace of him remains,
So no perceptible form of him remains, nor any trace.
No eye perceives him, no trace remains.
سوىexcept أَننيthat I بالوجدِof longing والصبرِand patience عالمٌaware
وأنتِand you فلاso no وجدٌlonging عليكupon you ولاnor صَبْرpatience
Except that I know longing and patience,
Except that I know longing and patience,
While you have neither longing nor patience.
While you know no longing, no patience.
وتشهدُand bears witness ليfor me عينٌan eye غزارٌcopious دموعُهاits tears
وماand not لكِfor you لاno دمعٌtears غزيرٌcopious ولاnor نَزْرscant
And an eye with copious tears bears witness for me,
My streaming tears bear witness to me,
Yet you have no tears, copious or scant.
While you have no copious tears, no trickling.
وَعُودِيَand my stem قدalready مصَّsucked out اشتياقيَmy longing ماءَهits sap
وعودُكِand your stem تُجريmake flow الماءَthe sap أوْرَاقُهُits leaves الخضرgreen
And my longing has already sucked the sap from my stem,
My lute has sucked away my agony,
While your stem's green leaves keep the sap flowing.
While the sap still flows in your lute's green wood.
ألاAh طالwas long ماthe time that سِرناwe journeyed إلىto وطنيكماyour two homes
فسارتْso journeyed إلىto أوطانِthe homes ألبابناour minds الخمرwine
Ah, how often we journeyed to your two homes,
Oh, how long we traveled to your home!
And wine journeyed to the homes of our minds,
But now the wine has journeyed to the vintner's.
زمانَin the days when يُرَدِّيناclothes us بظلِّكماin the shade of you two الهوىlove
رداءينtwo robes وَشَّىembroidered منalong حواشيهماthe hems of both الزَّهْرthe blossoms
In days when love clothed us in the shade of you both,
Time will bring us back in your shadow's shelter,
In two robes whose hems the blossoms embroidered.
Two cloaks, its edges embroidered with flowers.
محبٌّa lover ومحبوبٌand a beloved فمنso whoever يرناsees us يَقُلْsays
سروراًin delight بناat us هذاthis one هلالٌa crescent moon وذاand that one بدرa full moon
A lover and a beloved—whoever saw us would say,
A lover and his love - who will join us and say:
In delight at us: 'This is a crescent moon, and that a full moon.'
"Welcome! This new moon, that full moon?"
سقىmay water اللهُGod ذاكthat العهدَtime عهداًa time فقدfor already مضىpassed
وأغلقَand closed بابَthe door الوصلِof union منfrom بعدهِafter it الهجرseparation
May God water that time—a time now gone,
God watered that time - but it's passed away,
And, after it, separation closed the door of union.
After it shut the door of union against all meetings.
وياand oh ليتهif only it إِذwhen ماتَdied مُتناwe had died بموتِهِat its death
ففزناthen we would have triumphed وهلand is there للموتِfor death فيin تركناleaving us عُذْرan excuse
And oh, if only we had died with it when it died,
Would that when it died, we'd died in its death!
Then we would have triumphed—has death any excuse for leaving us?
What excuse has death to part us now?
أليسdid not جميلٌJamil ماتdie عِشقاًof love وعروةٌand Urwa
وقيسٌand Qays وغيلانٌand Ghaylan كذاlikewise ماتَdied والغَمْرand al-Ghamr
Did not Jamil die of love, and Urwa,
Was not Majnun famed for dying of love?
And Qays—and did not Ghaylan and al-Ghamr die likewise?
And Qays and Oroub - all died so, and Ghaylan!
