My reach is too short to thank you for what you bestow,

And my arm falls short of encompassing it.

You have succeeded your forefathers, the caliphs, in generosity,

So you tend the bounty they once tended.

    Ah, O long-awaited rain,

Whose bounty is for salt flats and tracts of land.

You loved the lofty deeds within reach,

Yet a love like yours is beyond reach.

Gifts distract us from the people of an age

Whose gifts are tied to the throats of beasts of prey.

And the wretched dupe is none but the one

Who hopes for eminence through deceit.

Abu al-Abbas, O full moon of lofty deeds

To its beholder, and O sun of endeavor!

The pigeons' feed arrived on pack animals,

And my dwellings were too cramped for the beasts that bore it.

People thought that we owned estates,

And that this was part of those estates' yield.

Abu al-Abbas, O you whose praise is sweeter

To the ears than the sweetness of music!

If indeed you have sated my hungry pigeons,

Then how many hungry people you have sated!
