فراقيmy parting from سيَّدَthe lord of الناسِthe people
فراقٌa parting هاجstirred وَسْواسيmy anxious thoughts
My parting from the lord of men
Parting with my master is
is a parting that has stirred my anxious thoughts.
A restless, anxious parting.
وبُعديand my distance عنهfrom him أَهدىbrought
ليَto me سُقْماًan illness ماnot لهfor it آسِa healer
And my distance from him has brought
And my distance from him
me an illness with no healer.
Afflicts me with incurable illness.
وهَبْهُand suppose that he نَسِيَforgot الوعدَthe promise
وماand not السِّيدُthe lord بالناسforgetful
And suppose he forgot the promise—
Yet he forgot his promise
though the lord is not forgetful—
Though the master is no common man.
أَيَنْسىwould he forget? أخْذِيَmy taking الكاسَthe cup
علىwith شوقٍlonging إلىfor كاسa cup
would he forget my taking the cup,
Does he forget my taking the cup
longing for another cup;
Yearning for another cup?
وحَثِّيand my eager quaffing of الصرفَunmixed wine بالرطلِby the ratl, a measure
وبالجامِand by the goblet وبالطَّاسand by the bowl
and my eager quaffing of unmixed wine by the ratl,
My urging more wine to be poured
and by the goblet and the bowl;
In bowl, in cup, in goblet?
وشربيand my drinking أوَّلَfirst الكاسِthe cup
وسُكْريand my drunkenness آخرَlast among الناسthe people
and my being first to drink the cup,
My drinking the first of the cup
and last of all to grow drunk;
And my drunkenness after all men?
وفتكيand my assault بالوصيفيِّon al-Wasifi
خليليmy friend فَتْكَthe assault of جَسّاسJassas
and my assault on al-Wasifi,
My attacking the cupbearer,
my friend, like the assault of Jassas;
My friend, attack of a sly fox,
وضَغْويand my yelping فيat الأحايينِtimes
وماand not بالضَّغْوِin yelping منْany باسharm
and my yelping now and then—
My singing through the watches of night
and there is no harm in yelping—
And with singing there's nothing amiss,
وصبِّيand my pouring ساعةَat the moment of الغَفْلَheedlessness (continued)
ةِcompletes 'heedlessness' فيinto أقداحِthe goblets of جُلاَّسيmy companions
and my pouring, in a moment of heedlessness,
My pouring in the heedless hour
into my companions' goblets?
Wine into cups of revelry.
ففيfor in ذلكthat ماwhat أوْسَmade ample room (continued)
عَcompletes 'made ample room' ليfor me منof ذكرِthe mention of إِيناسيmy companionable presence
For all that offers ample scope
So in that is what has wasted me
for me to speak of the pleasure of my company.
Of remembering my Enais.
وإلاَّand otherwise هاhere أَناI الساعthis moment (continued)
ةَcompletes 'this moment' فيat آخرِthe last of أنفاسيmy breaths
Otherwise—here I am this very
Else, here am I in my final hour
moment, drawing my last breaths;
And poetry remains after me
ويبقىand remains الشعرُpoetry منfrom بعديafter me
كجسمِlike a body غيرِnot ذيpossessing راسa head
and poetry will remain after me,
Like a body lacking a head.
like a body without a head.
