My life as ransom for the souls between Zamzam and the Stone!

They departed, and death overtook them unawares.

Souls that passed away with the swiftest passing, and left

the souls of this world's children drunk, yet without intoxication.

I marvel at a heart that did not split with grief,

even were it rock, or harder than rock.

Peace upon brothers in goodness; since

their brotherhood ended, we have said: farewell to goodness.

They came, crossing wilderness and towns, longing

for the finest House set in wilderness or town.

    ففازوا لَدُنْ فازوا بأجرٍ على أَجر

    They traveled by night, and death's hands traveled toward them;

so, in their triumph, they won reward upon reward.

They saw their pilgrimage as pilgrimage and battle, and could not bring

their souls to forgo gaining two treasures in one.

Indeed, they stood against blows and thrusts in a stance

as though they were standing upon burning coals.

Their tears flowed in reverence and fear,

as blood, whose horror made the land like the sea.

How noble they were, with death above their heads,

seeking refuge, in fear of death, at the door and the curtain!

Their ihram forbade them to wear armor,

so they wore nothing but the armor of patience.

And marvel at them, slaughtered as though they were

their sacrificial beasts on the days these are brought to slaughter.

Companions who stayed; for none but them are

saddles strapped; a delegation that returns only at the Resurrection.

    فراحوا إلى الأجداثِ في أُزُرٍ حُمْر

    In the morning, their ihram wraps came to them white;

by evening they went to the graves in red wraps.

    وما حُنِّطوا إِلا منْ التُّرْبِ لا العطر

    They were washed not with water, but with their blood;

and anointed with nothing but dust, not perfume.

How grievous a loss—even had a tenth of those

we lost among them been moths and tiny ants!

    فيا خيرَ محبُوبِينَ في خيرِ ما قبر

    A single grave in the earth held most of them;

O best of beloved ones, among the best ever buried!

Thousands of young men and graybeards were gathered

into a well whose sides lay close to the bottom.

Never have I seen more people buried than they,

yet they have no grave to count but one.

They did not fall into an abyss; rather, they raced

to a green hill among green hills,

to a radiant garden that grows in radiance

with the radiant faces it encountered among them.

O our pilgrims, why do I see the travelers returning,

yet do not see you returning with the travelers?

Have you dwelt beside the Ancient House? How lovely

is your lasting sojourn, until the end of time!

A sojourn of pilgrims required neither to circumambulate,

nor to walk the ritual course at an appointed time of night or dawn.

    وأين الأُسى حتى تُسَلِّيَ أو تُغْري

    They said: consolations are among the things that may soothe your loss;

but where are consolations, that they might soothe or stir?

They were terrorized where birds have refuge,

and where wild beasts need fear no terror.

O children of Islam! How much blessedness

they gained at the hands of the wretched children of unbelief!

At the hands of men of treachery and error—as though I can behold

their souls in the grip of error and treachery.

Beasts, whose foreheads have never known prostration,

nor have they known extending their palms for purification.

Nor has mention of fasting passed among their houses,

nor entered an ear, nor wandered within a breast.

Nor was pilgrimage to the House something for which they donned

the terrors of trackless wastes and desert on the way to it.

Rather, when we made pilgrimage there, they raided it—woe to them!

They have been burdened with a heavy burden of sin.

They deemed what they saw of its plunder a gain for themselves,

but it was nothing but a loss, no trifling one.

They thought what they had gained was wealth,

but by God, they gained nothing but poverty.

O Lord, grant Your enemy no respite, and strike him

with a scourge that shatters necks and breaks the back.

And, Lord, exact from them vengeance for Your religion,

for they bereaved it, making light of the blood-debt.

My God, bring back upon them the days of 'Ad,

and a day like the two days of the people of Madyan and al-Hijr.

And strengthen the Commander of the Faithful and his sword

with victory, as is Your wont, O Creator of victory!
