يزيدُsurpasses أَضعافاًmany times over علىbeyond المونقwhat is delightful
Come: I have a delightful gathering,
Come join my pleasant gathering
Surpassing the delightful many times over.
That exceeds splendor manifold
فقهوةٌand wine كالنارlike fire لكنهاbut it
إنif تلقَit encounters غيرَother than الهمِّcare لمnot تَحْرقit burns
And wine like fire, yet
Coffee like fire though it be
If it meets anything but care, it does not burn.
If met with cheer, burns not the soul
والنرجسُand the narcissus الأبلقُthe pied; two-colored والنفسُand the soul لاnot
تملُّtires قربَnearness to النرجسthe narcissus الأبلقthe pied; two-colored
And the pied narcissus—the soul does not
Narcissi so white, and company
Tire of being near the pied narcissus.
Of narcissi white, ne'er cloy the soul
وكلُّناand all of us منof نَمَطٍa kind واحدٍone
فيin الزيِّdress والمذهبand outlook والمنطقand speech
And all of us are of one kind,
We're all of a single cloth and way
In dress, outlook, and speech.
In raiment, creed, and wisdom's role
ماnot عندناamong us مَنanyone who نَفسُهُhimself عندهin his own eyes
كالشاهِlike the chess king والندمانُand the drinking companion كالبيذقlike a pawn
None among us regards himself
None here with self-conceit imbued
As a chess king, and his drinking companion as a pawn—
Like a King, or sly as fox full-sly
نديمُهhis drinking companion قُدامَهbefore him ثعلبٌa fox
فدامَunclear here; probably 'before' through a textual error ليثa lion الغابةِof the forest المطرقwith head bowed
His companion before him a fox,
His companion a wily fox
Before the forest's lion, its head bowed [first word uncertain].
Ever the forest's lion nearby
إنif شاءhe wishes أنto ينطقَspeak كانcame to pass الذيwhat
يشاءُhe wishes أوor إنif شاءَhe wishes لمnot ينطقhe speaks
If he wishes his companion to speak, it is as
To speak if he desires he may
He wishes; or, if he wishes, the companion does not speak.
Or not speak if that is his way
