وصفرٍ من بناتِ النحل تكسى

بواطنها وأظهرها عَوارِ

بواطنها وأظهرها عَوارِ

And yellow daughters of the bees are clothed

Clad in yellow are the virgin bees

within, while their outsides are bare.

Within and without in finery

عذارى يُفْتَضَضْنَ من الأعالي

عذارى يُفْتَضَضْنَ من الأعالي

إذا افتضْت من السفل الجواري

إذا افتضْت من السفل الجواري

Virgins deflowered from above,

Maidens glimpsed from on high

while maidens are deflowered from below.

When the common folk below draw nigh

وليست تنتجُ الأَضواءَ حتى

وليست تنتجُ الأَضواءَ حتى

تُلَقَّح في ذوائبها بنار

تُلَقَّح في ذوائبها بنار

They bring forth no light until

No light do they fashion till

they are impregnated in their tresses with fire.

Pollen ignites passion's pyre

كواكبُ لسن عنك بآفلاتٍ

كواكبُ لسن عنك بآفلاتٍ

إذا ما أشرقتْ شمسُ العقار

إذا ما أشرقتْ شمسُ العقار

Stars that never set and leave you

Stars shine not save for the grace

when the sun of wine rises.

Of the sun's radiant face

بعثت بها إلى ملك كريم

بعثت بها إلى ملك كريم

I sent them to a generous king,

To a noble king of glory

noble in ancestry, of praiseworthy lineage.

Exalted stock and famed in story

فأهديتُ الضياءَ بها إلى من

فأهديتُ الضياءَ بها إلى من

محاسنه تضيءُ لكلِّ سار

محاسنه تضيءُ لكلِّ سار

So through them I offered light to one

I send a gift of purest ray

whose virtues shine for every traveler by night.

To one whose beauty lights the way
