And when the full moon rose high and its light spread

When the full moon rose and spread its light

over the Tigris in Tishrin, lengthwise and breadthwise,

Over the Tigris in October with its length and breadth,

وقد قابل الماءَ المفضض نوره

وقد قابل الماءَ المفضض نوره

وبعضُ نجوم الليل يقفو سنا بعض

وبعضُ نجوم الليل يقفو سنا بعض

and its light had met the silvered water,

And when its scattered light met the water

and some stars of the night followed the radiance of others,

And some stars still joined each other in the night,

توهَّم ذو العين البصيرةِ أنه

توهَّم ذو العين البصيرةِ أنه

يرى باطنَ الأفلاكِ في ظاهِر الأرض

يرى باطنَ الأفلاكِ في ظاهِر الأرض

one with a discerning eye imagined that he

The one with seeing eyes imagined

saw the interior of the celestial spheres on the earth's surface.

He saw the inner spheres within the surface of the earth.
