And toward the two Raqqas I traverse the desert's villages,

    On a lean-backed, obedient mount.

So I visit al-Hani amid easy living

And safety from the calamities of time.

How lovely al-Karkh, how lovely al-ʿUmr—no, rather,

How lovely the monastery, how lovely the two cypresses!

Spring has revealed itself in robes of blossom,

And the doves have fashioned ornaments of song.

The gardens' faces were adorned, and now

    They proudly outshine beautiful faces.

Spring's hand has dressed them in a many-colored

    Mantle like Yemeni Atḥami cloth.

O my two friends, take this; refresh me with drink.

Pass me the tawny wine; do not rebuff me.

Keep the water away, keep the water away; rise!

Bring near, and bring near, the daughters of the wine-jars.

Give me every hue of wine to drink,

    Amid all these colors:

Green in hue, like emerald, amid red,

    Clear of surface, like crimson;

And daisies like fresh pearls, interspersed

    Among agate with coral;

And yellow oxeyes like gold dinars, surrounded

    By wallflower and buttercup blossoms.

And as though al-Nuʿman had spread over them

    Robes of al-Nuʿman's anemones.
