I call with the appeal of a tender, faithful friend.

a call from a caring, faithful friend.

ألست ترى الجوَّ في مُطرَفٍ

ألست ترى الجوَّ في مُطرَفٍ

من الغيم أَبهى من المطرف

من الغيم أَبهى من المطرف

Do you not see the sky wrapped in a mantle

Do you not see the sky in a fine cloak

of cloud, more splendid than a brocaded robe?

of cloud, more splendid than any cloak?

وعينُ السماءِ كعين المَشوقِ

وعينُ السماءِ كعين المَشوقِ

إِن يَدْعُها شوقُها تَذرف

إِن يَدْعُها شوقُها تَذرف

And heaven’s eye is like the eye of one who yearns:

And the sky’s eye is like the eye of one who yearns:

when its longing summons it, it sheds tears.

وقد قلتَ هل لكَ في قَرْقَفٍ

وقد قلتَ هل لكَ في قَرْقَفٍ

وكيف أكونُ بلا قَرْقَفِ

وكيف أكونُ بلا قَرْقَفِ

And you said, “Would you care for qarqaf wine?”

And you have said, “Would you care for wine?”

How could I possibly be without qarqaf?

And how could I be without wine?
