1. وحيدٌ بيانسَ مُستانِسُ

    فلله أُنْسُك يا يانسُ

    Lonely, I find companionship in Yanis;

    So God be praised for your company, O Yanis!

  2. شهابُ ذكاءٍ يفوقُ الشهابَ

    وفارسُ فهمٍ هو الفارس

    A meteor of wit, outshining the meteor,

    And a knight of understanding—he is the true knight.

  3. مُعَرَّى الخلائق مما يسوءُ

    ومن كلِّ ما سرّني لابِس

    Stripped of every trait that offends,

    And clothed in all that has delighted me.

  4. وَمَنْ لكَ بالأعجميِّ الفصيح

    كما ضَرَّمَ القبسَ القابس

    And who can bring you an eloquent non-Arab,

    Like a firebrand set ablaze by its kindler?

  5. إذا هو أنْشَدَ في مجلسٍ

    تطاولَ عُجْباً به الجالس

    When he recites verse in an assembly,

    The seated listener draws himself up with pride in him.

  6. خفيفُ النسيم خفاتينُه

    يميسُ بها غُصُنٌ مائس

    His caftans are a gentle breeze;

    A graceful bough sways within them.

  7. غزالٌ جَرَيتُ إلى حُبِّهِ

    فما ليَ عن حُبِّهِ حابسُ

    A gazelle whom I have raced to love,

    So nothing holds me back from loving him.

  8. ومُحتَرسٌ من عيونِ الظنونِ

    هواهُ عليَّ له حارس

    And he is wary of the eyes of suspicion;

    Love for him is his watchman over me.

  9. سريعٌ تنبُّهُهُ للعفافِ

    وعن كلِّ ما ريبةٍ ناعس

    Swift is his awakening to chastity,

    Yet drowsy toward anything suspect.
