    لها وَجْنةٌ مُشْبَعٌ صِبْغها

    A boyish girl, her temple-lock hanging loose;

    she has a cheek whose hue is richly saturated,

    and a mouth with which she chewed my lifeblood.

    Oh, if only her chewing would last for me!

    وكم طُرَّةٍ عَيْبُها صِمْغُها

    She shuns forelocks and coating them with gum;

    and many a forelock's flaw is its gum.

    Her neck has touched no choker,

    nor has her wrist touched a bracelet.

    When her glances sting me,

    her sting takes the place of healing incantations.

    And she sows discord between me and sleep,

    so her goading routs the army of sleep.

    And she has tanned me as a hide is tanned,

    with passionate love; yet her tanning has not displeased me.

    And even if she lapped at the heart's blood, I would not

    see the heart pained by her lapping.

    For how many a cry she has uttered within it!

    And had she treated me fairly, she would not have uttered it.
