You are a man who fills the water-buckets, and makes its way
to those farther away than us your freely bestowed bounty.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you وَهّابٌa generous giver أَغَرُّradiant وَتارَةًand at times

You are a radiant, generous giver, and at times
a tawny lion wearing death's mantle.

Your father is the one who saved his people at Yathrib,
and you, among his sons, are the much-praised one for whom ransom is offered.
إِذاwhen ماever قُرَيشُQuraysh of المُلكِkingship يَوماًon some day تَفاضَلواvied for excellence

When royal Quraysh, on some day, vie for excellence,
a white-blazed champion from Marwan's house comes forth.

Should exile make a dwelling distant, son of Marwan,
a needy kinsman still strikes sparks from your fire-stick.
فَياso O رُبَّmany a مَنone who يُدنيbrings himself near وَيَحسِبُand thinks أَنَّهُthat he
يَوَدُّكَloves you وَالنائيand the distant one أَوَدُّmore loving وَأَنصَحُand more sincere
How many a man draws near and thinks that he
loves you, while the distant man is more loving and sincere.
هَجَوتُI lampooned زُهَيراًZuhayr ثُمَّthen إِنّيindeed I مَدَحتُهُpraised him

I lampooned Zuhayr, then indeed I praised him;
noble men have always been lampooned and praised.
فَلَمso not أَدرِI knew يُمناهُhis right hand إِذاwhen ماever مَدَحتُهُI praised him

أَبِالمالِwhether with wealth أَمor بِالمَشرَفِيَّةِwith Mashrafi swords أَنفَحُmore lavish
When I praised him, I did not know whether his right hand
was freer with wealth or with Mashrafi swords.
وَذيand a man with كُلفَةٍa facial blemish أَغراهُincited him بيagainst me غَيرُnot ناصِحٍa well-wisher
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him وَجهُthe face of المُحَرِّشِthe instigator أَقبَحُuglier
Many a blemished man was set against me by an ill-adviser;
I told him: 'The instigator's face is uglier.'
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand even if كُنتُI was المُسيءَthe wrongdoer فَإِنَّنيnevertheless I

Indeed, even if I was the wrongdoer, I am nevertheless,
in every circumstance, more sincere toward him than that man.

I toiled on until the shadow began to grow, after
shrinking so far it almost vanished into the mirage,
وَجيفَthe swift trotting of المَطاياthe mounts ثُمَّthen قُلتُI said لِصُحبَتيto my companions

keeping the mounts at a swift trot; then I told my companions,
while they were still mounted: 'The cool hours have come; travel on at evening.'
