مَرَرنَ أَمامَ الرَكبِ وَالرَكبُ رائِحُ
Did you not know what the auspiciously crossing gazelles said?
Did you not know what the graceful sandgrouse said
They passed before the caravan as it departed at evening.
As they passed by the caravan, while it was departing?
فَسَبَّحَso praised God مَنthose who لَمdid not يَزجُرِread omens from الطَيرَthe birds مِنهُمُamong them

Those among them who did not read bird-omens praised God,
So he who did not forbid the birds praised them
and my heart knew for certain that they foretold success.
And my heart was sure they were melancholic
فَأَوَّلُso interpreted مَنthe one whom مَرَّتpassed بِهِby him الطَيرُthe birds نِعمَةٌa blessing

So the one the birds passed read their omen as a blessing
The first of the birds that passed was a blessing for us
for us, and a pleasant night’s lodging at Lahwa.
And a night's stay by an agreeable playmate

Disheveled, radiant, clearly colored

and with black, swaying hair upon a nursing doe’s neck,
And a black curl on a spindle's forehead
a dark fawn at Rammān calling to her as it learned to walk.
Called by desire, more rosy than a scattering pomegranate

And the pleasure of wine heals heartache after gloom
with a water-drawer among the sheltering tree’s roots,
With what flows from its shaded veins

So when the torrents receded, a canal appeared to it
autumn-watered growth, laid bare as the gravel beds opened.
Dug by an autumn rain, its banks collapsed

When you taste its mouth, you'd say it has the taste of wine
the wineskin brought close and tilted until it poured it out.
The spout came close until it mixed with it, overflowing

And in ivory and henna are hands whose fingers
were like the dune’s white fat; no kindler had given it a fire-stick.
Are like gazelle fat untouched by the adorning bracelet

So how would the youth be after old age and after
you have sought praise, and a praiser has risen through praising you?
You were extolled and praised by every praiser?

It has troubled me that the jealous man now likes me,
And I was annoyed that the jealous one wanted me
and that my drinking companions are middle-aged, eminent chiefs.
While my regrets were the grumbling elders

The women bearing grudges have turned away from me, though I once saw
The owners of calumny turned away from me though I see
headstrong women delighting in my words.
My words arousing the passionate women

I pursued while the first bloom of youth ran wild within me,
I sought, and the youths within me are impetuous

With white lower parts as if their burdens are

The palm trees of the villages and the waving grasses

They turned toward us on massive, full-grown camels,
So obscure letters were composed for us
some quick-stepping, some long-striding, to serve our purpose.
To fulfill our need with laxity and freedom

Telling us of hidden passions, and above them
lay the shade of curtained litters, the mounts leaning near.
Are the shades of rooms, and the mounted scout wandering

They confided in us with their eyes, beyond our spoken words,
Whispering to us with a wink without our talk
and granted wishes while they joked.
And fulfilling wishes while they are flirting

From them there mingled with us the scent of a perfume shipment,
And there reached us from them a gentle fragrance
of musk, brought to the encampment by a trader making profit.
Of musk whose scent leads to the beloved strongly scenting

They perfumed themselves with its incense that evening; it was sprinkled
They prayed the night prayer and sprinkled it
over them in linen, in pure, seamless wraps.
On their cotton robes, good admonishers

We spent the night upon patterned rugs, the fair women like sculpted figures,
So we spent the night on the carpets while the white
the lamps lighting the hollows of their throats for us.
Illuminated for us their shining lamps

When they captivated us in conversation, hearts
toward her hearts with ribs between them and the women.
Swayed to them beyond the passionate souls

While the jealous one just before was biting his fingers
as a bolting workhorse bites upon the bit,
Like a lion biting on an axe handle raging

miserable, repeating his two cries of grief to his mother,
Gloomily returning the two cubs to their mother
for a butting blow had struck him from us and from them.
While he was gored by us and by them charging

When we parted, they grieved with tears,
So when we parted, they bid us farewell in tears
and provisioned us with suffering while they remained unhurt.
And provisioned us while they were sincerest

So my companions raised the mounts, and with moaning they left
Hunayda, and the glancing eyes grew wistful.
Yearningly, while the eyes were most ardent

Woe to their mother from disgrace, if she were to change
our enemies, or befriend those we befriend!
And make peace with those we make war!

And tawny wine from a tavern in Rammān: at dawn
And a blond from a pomegranate shop has become
a morning server brought it to me, without waiting for sunrise.
My morning draught, though the East did not see dawn break

So I served her freely as if her companion were
were a lifelong brother, though some drinking partners bring disgrace.
A brother of time, while some servers were wasteful

So today a filled goblet missed me
along with tender roast meat and singing women raising their voices.
And roast meat and reeds were cheap

If we stay up through the night drinking wine
at night from a cloth-stoppered vessel, its pitch oozing.
Accompanied by the dark in which lamps are shining

A Yemeni whose color is like salt, his back quivers
when brandished—wrought with poison, a wounder.
When stirred, stamped on poison, wounding

I imposed myself on her when she accustomed to my company
amid the featureless desert, with water far away.
With vague waters and the stream is receding

And a valley that became green and its water yellowed
where dusky sandgrouse came to drink, swooping to and fro:
From the turbidity of heavy rain in which waves collide

I drove there a sturdy she-camel whose hoof-pads stayed clear
I set out with it across a barren desert whose shade
of the knolls, save where protective leather strips shielded them.
Shunned the interior except when the winds blow at it

by a camel-driver for young she-camels of Arhab stock,
Over ridges from the widest type, lamenting

Like the wind of Khuzama that an evening
by a north wind and wetted by drenching showers.
North wind stirred with continuous heavy downpours

At dawn the tawny, noble-bred camels found that there had appeared
So the blond forelocks appeared and the landmarks
before them the waymarks and clearly visible roads.
And the racing steed became visible to them
