And a caller cries in a dog's voice, screened by

the night's twin curtains of darkness and its clouds.

He called, hoping, as he called, to awaken

a young man like Ibn Layla, when its stars had set.

I sent him a black pot, not a milch camel,

yielding freely whenever its barren wind blows balefully.

As though the white vertebrae in its recesses

were maidens appearing when their loved one was struck down.

Raging, like an ostrich's breast, it was stoked

with thick pieces of wood whose dry fragments had fallen away.

Kept ready, with no curtain placed before it,

when the crooked nursing camel's braided cord falls away.
