And many a man will gloat over me, his enmity plain,

    when fate's decrees bring on my death;

when a house upon a rise encloses me,

they will return in haste, and by evening it will stand deserted.

So do not be fooled when I trail my robe with my head wrapped:

I am a man who, when matters turn grave, girds himself for action.

As though I had never once told a raiding troop,

"Charge!" or told young men in a cavalcade, "Ride on!"

They rode on together, their swift riding long drawn out,

until dawn appeared, bright-flanked and plain to see.

Nor brought a lean she-camel at dawn to brimming pools,

with men for whom a fifth-day watering counted as early.

I brought her to water, the pale camels' chests secured with breast-straps,

while dawn's throat was pierced by the brilliant star.

They rejoiced together after their long, swift ride,

at dawn, when its first gleams appeared.

Forerunners of its first light appeared; we recognized them,

while its greater part lay hidden in night's blackness.
