إِنَّ امرأً وَرِثَ الثُّوَيرَ وَمالِكاً

إِنَّ امرأً وَرِثَ الثُّوَيرَ وَمالِكاً

وَالمَرءَ كلثوماً لِعالٍ فاضِلُ

وَالمَرءَ كلثوماً لِعالٍ فاضِلُ

Indeed, a man who is heir to al-Thuwayr and Malik

A man inherited nobility, wealth and generosity

And to the man Kulthum is surely exalted and distinguished.

While another was born to ascendancy and greatness

وَنَماه عَمرٌو لِلعُلى وَمَهلهلٌ

وَنَماه عَمرٌو لِلعُلى وَمَهلهلٌ

لَبِمنزِلٍ ما نالَهُ مُتَناوِلُ

لَبِمنزِلٍ ما نالَهُ مُتَناوِلُ

And Amr and Muhalhil raised him to glory;

Honored by fate to achieve glory and eminence

He is surely at a station no aspirant has attained.

To a station he could not have reached through his efforts
