وَفاهَت فَأَضحى الدر مُنتَشر العقد
She appeared, and the full moon shone from within the striped cloak.
The radiance of the full moon appeared from within the cold
And she spoke, so the necklace's pearls lay scattered.
And it blossomed, so the pearls were scattered about
وَمرتand she passed كَماjust as مَرpassed النَسيمthe breeze فَلوand if رَناgazed

And she passed like the breeze; if a man gazed
It passed by like a breeze, so if one pure of heart
At her, though sound of heart, he would die of passion.
Had glanced towards it, he would have died of passion

And the east wind carried her, so she swayed,
The morning breeze carried it away, so it swooned
And leaned as a slender branch of laurel leans.
And leaned like a slender branch bends

And how wondrous that the generous lady belongs
To the Turks, yet her glances are attributed to India.
To the Turks, though her glances are attributed to India

Its advent described the dawn’s emergence to us
And that cheek's redness, from the redness of the rose.
And the redness of that cheek described the red rose

And that sweet saliva told us of the lips' dusky hue,
And that slender shape told us about a gazelle’s neck
And the ewer of that neck told of the egg-like breast.
And that chaste bosom told of an egg in a breast

I had not known before love a wily child
Could capture the heart of the lion and the tawny lion.
Who hunts the hearts of lions and tender rose

Towards her, as tears flowed down my cheek

She glanced at me but did not miss, and passed but did not turn
So I said, while my heart melted from the fierce burning:
So I said, as my heart melted from the intensity of passion

Take my blood from that gazelle, for she
Deliberately shot me with the twin arrows of his eyes [uncertain reading].
Shot me with my own arrow, purposely killing me

And in my creed a free man is not killed for a slave.
And in my doctrine, the free man is not killed for a slave

May God protect the days that have passed and the moment
For the one who stole it, while reason strayed from sound judgment.
Stolen by their thief, as the mind strayed from righteousness

I say to whoever owns those domes, taking refuge
Like one who names Salma while his thoughts turn to Hind.
Like one remembering Salma, while the conscience is in India

So it was said: They are people who are the finest in existence
And the skull of the nobles in honor and glory.
And the pinnacle of nobility in honor and glory

Kings of the Turks whose lands
By dusky spears of al-Khatt and the keen Indian sword.
Were guarded by the Syrian bow and the Indian sword

Among these proud people of lofty origin, if they conquer
They annihilate; if they give, they are like an enriching downpour.
They destroy, and if they give, they give bountifully

So I said: My soul, you have risked with foolishness
And sold a heart to the Turks without payment.
And sold, for the Turks, a heart without worth

Seek healing and recovery from the lion's lip?
Intend to gain health and cure from the lion's mouth?

Accusing while you have not demonstrated, O cold flint?

A man is blamed for villainy even if he is highborn

So rise and call upon, for the critical matter, a brother of nobility
And seek refuge with one whose lineage has long been noble:
And take pleasure in one noble in origin, of olden covenant
