ياO لِسانيmy tongue صرحproclaim openly بِمَدحin praise of النَبيthe Prophet
يا لِساني صرح بِمَدح النَبي
وَأَبيand Abu بَكرBakr التقيthe devout النَقيthe pure
وَأَبي بَكر التقي النَقي
O my tongue, proclaim aloud the praise of the Prophet,
O my tongue, proclaim the praise of the Prophet,
and of Abū Bakr, the God-fearing, the pure.
And of Abu Bakr, the devout, the pure.
يُشرقshines النُورthe light مِنfrom مَديحpraise of أَبيAbu حَفHaf- (beginning of Hafs)
يُشرق النُور مِن مَديح أَبي حَف
صٍ-s (completing Hafs) وَعُثمانand Uthman وَالإِمامand the Imam عَليAli
صٍ وَعُثمان وَالإِمام عَلي
Light shines from my praise of Abū Ḥaf—
Light shines from the praise of Abu Haf-
—ṣ, of ʿUthmān, and of the Imam ʿAlī.
s, and Uthman, and Imam Ali.
يَتَحلىis adorned بِمَدحwith praise of طَلحةTalha نطقيmy speech
يَتَحلى بِمَدح طَلحة نطقي
وَبِمَدحand with praise of الزُبَيرal-Zubayr فيin كُلevery حَيcommunity
وَبِمَدح الزُبَير في كُل حَي
My speech is adorned with praise of Ṭalḥa,
My speech is adorned with praise of Talha,
and with praise of al-Zubayr among every people.
And with praise of al-Zubayr in every community.
ياO ابنson of عَوفAwf وَياand O سَعيدSa'id بنson of زَيدZayd
يا ابن عَوف وَيا سَعيد بن زَيد
لَكُماfor you both حيزhas been secured كُلevery فَضلvirtue جليmanifest
لَكُما حيز كُل فَضل جلي
O Ibn ʿAwf, and O Saʿīd ibn Zayd,
O Ibn Awf, and O Sa'id ibn Zayd,
in you both every manifest virtue is gathered.
Every manifest virtue has been secured for you both.
يَعبقwafts العطرthe fragrance مِنfrom مَديحيmy praise لسعدfor Sa'd
يَعبق العطر مِن مَديحي لسعد
وَلِمَولايand for my master عامرAmir القرشيof Quraysh
وَلِمَولاي عامر القرشي
Fragrance wafts from my praise of Saʿd,
Fragrance wafts from my praise of Sa'd,
and of my master ʿĀmir, the Qurashī.
And of my master Amir of Quraysh.
يَممturned toward القَلبthe heart حُبهُمlove for them وَنَحاهand sought it
يَمم القَلب حُبهُم وَنَحاه
فَحوىso held حالهits state بِكيلin a measure وَفيfull
فَحوى حاله بِكيل وَفي
Love of them, and all akin to it, fills the heart;
The heart turned toward love for them and sought it;
such is the very state of every faithful soul.
So its state held that love in full measure.
يَتمنىlongs بِأَنto يَراهُمsee them وَيَحظىand be blessed
يَتمنى بِأَن يَراهُم وَيَحظى
بِلقاهمwith meeting them فيin خلدeternity خلدeternity عَليexalted
بِلقاهم في خلد خلد عَلي
He longs to see them and to be blessed
It longs to see them and be blessed
by meeting them in a lofty, everlasting abode.
With meeting them in eternity—an exalted eternity.
يَهتَديis guided مِنby ضيائهمtheir radiance كُلevery راءbeholder
يَهتَدي مِن ضيائهم كُل راء
مِنfrom ظَلامthe darkness الهَوىof desire وَمِنand from كُلevery غيerror
مِن ظَلام الهَوى وَمِن كُل غي
By their radiance every beholder is guided
Every beholder is guided by their radiance
out of passion’s darkness and every error.
From the darkness of desire and from all error.
يُحسنis fitting المَدحthe praise فيهمof them فتوسلso seek a means of approach
يُحسن المَدح فيهم فتوسل
بِهمthrough them كُلevery بكرةmorning وَعشيand evening
بِهم كُل بكرة وَعشي
Praise grows beautiful when it is of them; so plead
Praise of them is fitting; so seek a means of approach
through them every morning and evening.
Through them, every morning and evening.
ياO إِلَهيmy God صلsend blessings عَلىupon قَبرthe grave of طَهTaha
يا إِلَهي صل عَلى قَبر طَه
وَعَلىand upon آلهhis family وَكُلand every تَقيpious person
وَعَلى آله وَكُل تَقي
O my God, bless the grave of Ṭā Hā,
O my God, send blessings upon Taha's grave,
and his family, and every God-fearing soul.
And upon his family and every pious person.
