يُصافحgreets وَجهاًa face لَمdid not يَزَلcease نورهُits light يَعلوrises
Favor from the Most Merciful at every hour
Blessings from the Merciful in every hour
Greets a face whose light has never ceased to rise.
Illuminate a face whose light still rises
بشيبتهthrough his gray hair نسقىwe are watered إِذاwhen أَقلعhas ceased الحَياthe rain
وَغارَتand have sunk away عُيونsprings الأَرضof the earth وَارتفعand has vanished الطلthe dew
Through his gray hair we are watered when the rain has ceased,
With his gray hair we are watered when life departs
And the earth’s springs have sunk away and the dew has vanished.
And the eyes of earth close as the heights ascend
تَهللhe beamed بِالتَقوىwith piety وَقاراًin dignity وَبَهجةand joy
فَظاهرهso his outward being نورlight وَباطنهand his inward being وصلcommunion
He beamed with piety, dignity, and joy;
He rejoices in piety, dignified and joyful
So his outward being is light, and his inward being communion.
His outer self is light and his inner self connection
وَعمرand he restored بالعلمwith learning الشَريفnoble مَنازِلاًdwellings
عَلاهاhad overtaken them الفَناruin مِنfrom قَبلbefore ذَلِكَthat وَالجَهلand ignorance
And with noble learning he restored dwellings
And he built with noble knowledge many dwellings
Over which ruin and ignorance had previously reigned.
Emptiness and ignorance had ruled them before that
وَمَدand he extended عَلىto العافينthose seeking alms كَفاًa hand سَخيةgenerous
بذولاًlavishly giving إِلىuntil أَنthat عمناencompassed us all ذَلِكَthat البَذلgenerosity
And he extended to those seeking alms a generous hand,
He extended to the healthy a generous palm
Lavishly giving, until that generosity encompassed us all.
Giving freely until that giving was made blind
جَزاكَmay He reward you إِلهGod of العَرشthe Throne ياO ابنson of محمدMuhammad
جَزاءthe reward of وصولone who maintains ties منعمa benefactor قَولهhis word الفعلdeed
May the God of the Throne reward you, O son of Muhammad,
May the God of the Throne reward you, O son of Mohammed
With the reward due a benefactor who maintains ties, whose word is deed.
With the reward of a benefactor whose word becomes action
تَفضلتyou bestowed favors وَالأفضالand acts of generosity مِنكَfrom you سَجيةan innate trait
عَلىupon كُلevery عافseeker of alms فيin الوجودexistence لَهاit has هطلa downpour
You have bestowed favors, and generosity is your nature;
You have excelled, and excelling is your wont
Upon every seeker in existence it pours like rain.
Upon all the hale your bouties constantly rain
مَدحتكI praised you لاnot أَرجوI hope for الحطامworldly dross وَإِنَّماbut rather
تَشَرفتI gained honor فيin أَوصافكمyour qualities وَلَكَand yours is الفَضلthe credit
I praised you, hoping for no worldly dross; rather,
I praise you not in hope of worthless fragments
I gained honor in describing your qualities, and yours is the credit.
But have gained honor describing your virtues and yours is the credit
كَفىit suffices شَرَفاًas honor أَنيthat I حسبتI was counted عَلَيكُمas belonging to you
فَاسموso I rise عَلىabove قَوميmy people وَقَدريand my standing بِكُمthrough you يَعلوrises
It is honor enough that I was counted among you;
Honor enough that I counted myself among you
So I rise above my people, and through you my standing rises.
And through you my people and worth are made greater
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِأَنيwith the fact that I قَدindeed نسبتI was related إِلَيكُمto you
وَجدكمand your forefather الأَعلىthe most exalted تَلوذُseek refuge بِهِin him الرُسلthe messengers
And who can grant me kinship with you,
By what right do I claim I am linked to you?
Whose most exalted forefather is the refuge of the messengers?
And take shelter in your most lofty line of descent?
