يآلO clan of عُبادٍʿUbād دَعوَةٌa call بَعدَafter هَجمَةٍan onslaught
يآل عُبادٍ دَعوَةٌ بَعدَ هَجمَةٍ
فهلhave you then منكُمُamong you منany قوةstrength وزمَاعِand resolve
فهل منكُمُ من قوة وزمَاعِ
O household of ʿUbād—a call after an onslaught!
O clan of ʿUbād—a call after an onslaught!
Is there among you any strength, any firm resolve,
Have you, then, any strength and resolve
فتسعواso that you strive لجارٍfor a neighbor حَلّsettled وَسطamong بيوتكمyour homes
فتسعوا لجارٍ حَلّ وَسط بيوتكم
غريبa stranger وجاراتand women neighbors تُركنَwere left جياعِhungry
غريب وجارات تُركنَ جياعِ
that you might hasten to a neighbor lodged amid your homes—
to aid a neighbor settled among your homes—
a stranger—and to women neighbors left hungry?
a stranger—and women neighbors left hungry?
وماand not كانتwas الأجوافal-Ajwāf (the lowlands) منّيfrom me مُحَيَّةًgreeted
وما كانت الأجواف منّي مُحَيَّةً
وساكنهاand its inhabitants منof غُدَّةa plague-swelling وأَفاعيand vipers
وساكنها من غُدَّة وأَفاعي
Nor had those bellies been kept alive by me,
And al-Ajwāf never received my greeting,
nor what dwelt within them: a swelling and vipers—
and its inhabitants are plague and vipers—
طَحُونcrushing كمُلقىlike something laid down مِبرَدِa file القينthe smith فَعمَةٌthick-bodied
طَحُون كمُلقى مِبرَدِ القين فَعمَةٌ
بجرعَاءon the sandy ground of مِلحٍMilḥ أوor بجَوِّin the hollow of نطاعِNiṭāʿ
بجرعَاء مِلحٍ أو بجَوِّ نطاعِ
grinding, thick-bodied, like a smith’s file lying cast down
crushing, thick-bodied, like a smith’s file laid down—
on a sandy salt-flat, or in a hollow of hides.
on Milḥ’s sandy ground or in Niṭāʿ’s hollow.
