There came to my companions, while they slept,
a night-visiting phantom of Umm Hisn.

and firmly rooted crops and vineyards of grapevines.

and he made her grow without stunting.

though I had not shot at her before she shot at me?”

Ungrateful, she neither grants release nor accepts ransom,
when her snares fasten upon a captive.

They emerged from [weakness] and returned to it,
having, for my sake, matched a mountain spur.

remaining there; and would that my mother had not borne me.

Ah, O camel-driver, alas for you—do not blame me.
Do not neglect yourself, and leave me be.

For I have worn life until
I tired of living and said, “Enough for me.”

And I encountered blessings and escaped
many evils; and I overcame my rival.

Nor did I squander it, to deserve blame for that;
for wasting your wealth is no trifling matter.

Rather, it goes to every impoverished petitioner
who says, “Listen! Let me tell you my plight,”

“Help me, for God's sake, and do not abandon me.”

With it I protect my good name; my honor is dear
to me when indignation overtakes me.

I have seen that those who withhold wealth one day
end by being cast down, then buried.
