Indeed, the fair-skinned beauties now seem as though
they see a mangy man whenever I am among them.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen لاقَيتُهُنَّI met them بِبَلدَةٍin a town

And once, whenever I met them in a town,
they would say, though I was a stranger, “Welcome, welcome!”
وَلَستُand I am not بِشَيخٍan old man قَدalready تَوَجَّهgrown advanced in age دالِفٍshuffling

Nor am I a shuffling old man, far advanced in years,
but a young man of good stock among the people.
