He played at youth, though old age had overtaken him,

and his bond with Jamra had become precarious.

He went gray—no welcome to white

hair and grayness, that absent visitor he awaits!

If only Jamra would draw near to him—

and yet Jamra is far away from him.

    God’s peace and His bounty,

and His mercy, and a sky pouring rain—

a cloud sending down sustenance for His servants,

so it revived the land, and the trees flourished.

I see people have adopted a new habit,

and in every new affair, counsel is taken:

they slight anyone whose bounty they deem meager,

even if he keeps faith among them or does good.

And they admire anyone they see possessing

grazing herds, even if he is ignorant.

Ah, for these people—if only they knew

that good brings good, and evil brings evil!

So one day is against us, and one day for us,

and one day we are saddened, and one day gladdened.
