How can I say what I shall say,
How can I say what I will say
when my heart is ravaged by love of him?
While my heart is intoxicated with love?
أخذتنيcarried me إلىto السَّرابِthe mirage المراياthe mirrors

Mirrors carried me to the mirage,
The mirages have led me astray
and torrents hurled me into breathlessness.
And the torrents have cast me into panting.
وطريقيand my path فيin عَثرةِthe stumble الخَطوِof the steps غامتْgrew clouded

And my path clouded over in the stumbling of my steps,
My path was obscured by stumbling steps,
and the stranger's darkness upon it was mire.
And the gloom of a stranger surrounds it.
وجرىand drifted الغيمُthe clouds شاحِباًpale وبعيداًand distant
والوميضُand the glimmer الخفيفُfaint منهfrom it أُفولُfading away
And the clouds drifted, pale and distant,
The clouds flowed pale and far,
and their faint glimmer was a fading away.
And their faint flashes set.

And on the bank of the windblown sands lies one slain,
On the banks of streams a sacrifice
whose ribs the drawn blade has not left.
That the anointed one did not abandon.

And here or there a fire has vanished,
And scattered ruins humiliated.
and decayed remains, scattered and sifted.

And the hearthstones are pensive widows,
And echo in the horizon are wounds and howls.
and the echo across the expanse is wounds and a ghoul.
The southern winds have demolished them,

The nights sent their fury whirling southward,
And the plains did not help us northwards.
and northward; the plains brought us no relief.

And we hid behind the camel litters until
A storm subsided and a murmur calmed.
a shower subsided and a coo fluttered.
Perhaps in the distances there was rejoicing,

Perhaps there was rejoicing in the outlying places:
A sword dancing, a flute player and drums.
a dancing sword, a neighing steed, and drums.
Or we passed a poet being inspired,

Or we passed a poet revealing himself,
While the scars bleed with wounds.
and the drinking companions, despite their wounds, were stalwarts.

And near us, wild chamomile or wormwood,
A scent or a rising wreath.
and fragrance, or an emerging wreath.

لاno رَبابٌclouds فيon وجههاits face أوor هطولُrainfall
This earth's hands are two tracts of sand;
With no showers on its face or rain.
no clouds upon its face, nor rainfall.
The stars sink in it broken,

And the stars sway within it in brokenness,
And its flowers are robes of withering.
and withering is the flowers' robe.
Straying and lost, my path holds only

غيرُexcept (بانَتْshe departed).. وخافقيand my beating heart مكبولُshackled
Wandering, lost—and on my path there is nothing
“It appeared”...while my fluttering heart is shackled.
but 'She departed'—and my heart is shackled.
The ruins stopped me when they came into view,
أوقفتنيstopped me الأطلالُthe ruins حينwhen تراءَتْcame into view
وبظنّيand in my view قدindeed حدّثتنيspoke to me الطُّلولُthe remnants؛
The ruins stopped me when they came into view,
And I fancied the hills spoke to me:
and, I believe, the remnants had spoken to me:
"O wounded one who spent a woeful age,
ياO جريحاًwounded one وغابَand vanished دهراًfor an age مُريباًunsettling
وصعودُand the rising الظنونِof doubts هَمٌّa sorrow يطولُthat lasts
O wounded one, gone for an unsettling age,
And the ascent of suspicions is endless sorrow!"
and rising doubts are a grief that lingers.
"How do you pass and abandon the virgin oasis?
فانطوتْso she folded away وانطفتْand went dark سعادُSuad وغابتْand vanished
وتهاوىand collapsed فيهاwithin her الهوىlove المعلولُailing
So Suad folded away, went dark, and vanished,
A gazelle...when it owns no meadows!"
and ailing love fell to pieces within her.
"But when we saw you in tears,
وتوارتْand she hid لأنّهاbecause she is فرَسٌa mare قدhad
ضَجّclamored فيهاwithin her سفرجلٌa quince معسولُhoneyed
And she hid herself, for she was a mare in whom
We cried...for the killer is also the killed."
a honeyed quince had clamored.
"So cry for a scattered love like grass
فبَكاهاso wept for her الحيُّthe tribe الأسيفُsorrowful وقالواand they said:
فبَكاها الحيُّ الأسيفُ وقالوا:
أوّلُthe beginning الأمرِof the affair رَجْفَةٌa tremor ونُحولُand wasting away
So the sorrowing tribe wept for her and said:
Whose necks the smooth blade has severed."
At first come trembling and wasting away.
"Walk in darkness and remember;
أينwhere أوّبتَdid you return، هلdid تَحَرَّقتَyou burn with longing يوماًever
لسعادٍfor Suad، ووصلهاand union with her مأمولُhoped for!
Where did you return? Have you ever burned
The companion of light carries what is supported."
for Suad, while union with her was hoped for?
"Adorn yourself on earth, its length and breadth,
كيفhow تمضيdo you go on وتهجرُand abandon الجَنَّةَthe paradise البِكْرَvirgin؟
غزالٌa gazelle.. وماand not لديهin its possession حقولُfields!
How can you go on and abandon the virgin paradise?
For the garment of the messenger is width and height."
A gazelle—and it has no fields!
"And forgive, these are expanses of whiteness,
غيرbut أنّاthat we لماwhen رأيناكَwe saw you دمعاًtears
قدindeed بكيناwe wept.. فالقاتلِfor the killer المقتولُthe one killed
Yet when we saw you all tears,
And seek revelation...for the horizon is blocked."
we wept—for the killer is the one killed.
I became conscious; the sky is elevated
فابكِso weep عِشقاًfor a love مُبدّداًscattered مثلَlike عشبٍgrass
جزَّsheared أعناقَهُits necks الردىdeath المصقولُburnished
So weep for a love scattered like grass
And the earth widely spread with the descent of lights.
whose necks burnished death has shorn.
We left its ruins...and continued,
وامشِand walk فيin عتمةthe darkness المسالكِof the pathways واذْكُرْand remember؛
صاحبُthe possessor النُورِof light حاملٌa bearer محمولُone borne
And walk through the pathways' darkness, and remember:
And the long journey is a twisted path.
the possessor of light is bearer and borne.
A singer chanted in the calm of sorrow
وتزَيَّاand he robed himself فيin الأرضِthe earth، طولاًlengthwise وعرضاًand breadthwise
فقميصُfor the shirt البشيرِof the herald عَرضٌbreadth وطولُand length
And he robed himself across the earth, lengthwise and breadthwise,
And his tearful eyelid watered the traveler.
for the herald's shirt is breadth and length.
Did we wake from the shaking of revelation when
واغفُand doze، هذيthese مرابعٌabodes منof بياضٍwhiteness
واقْصدand seek الكَشْفَunveiling.. فالمدىfor the expanse مسدولُdraped
And doze: these are abodes of whiteness;
Cavaliers blew through us and steeds?
and seek unveiling, for the expanse is draped.
Or does a voice ring in my chest:
وانتبهتُand I awoke؛ السماءُthe sky مرفوعةٌraised high
والأرضُand the earth مبسوطةُspread out الضياءِradiance حُلولُindwelling
And I awoke: the sky is lifted high,
"Stop him...for he is accountable."
and the earth, spread with radiance, is indwelling.
The bells asked me: “Do you have a path,
وتركناand we left أطلالَهاher ruins.. ومضيناand we went on
والمسيرُand the journey البعيدُfar سَرْجٌa saddle مَلولُweary
And we left her ruins and went on,
Guide, exit and entrance?”
and the long journey is a weary saddle.
And when the enamored gasp in yearning,
وتَغَنّىand sang فيin هَدْأَةِthe stillness الحزنِof sorrow حَادٍa camel-driver
وسقىand watered الرَّحلَthe camel saddle جفْنُهhis eyelid المبلولُwet
And a camel-driver sang in sorrow's stillness,
Due to intense absence...the messenger came.
and his wet eyelid watered the camel saddle.
The hearts that left them confused and mindless
هلdid صحوناwe awaken منfrom رّجَّةِthe tremor الوَحيِof revelation لمَّاwhen
هفَّswept lightly فيناthrough us فَوارِسٌriders وخيولُand horses
Did we awaken from revelation's tremor when
Blinded before him.
riders and horses swept through us?
And the lives of people passed in sacrilege...
أمor ترىdo you suppose هاتفٌa calling voice يرنُّrings بصدريin my breast؛
أَوقِفُوهُhalt him.. فإنّهfor he مسؤولُanswerable
Or might a voice be ringing in my breast:
And generations and descendants perished.
Halt him, for he is answerable.
Eyes looked up asking the sky
ساءَلَتنيquestioned me الأجراسُthe bells هلdo لكَyou have دربٌa path
ودليلٌand a guide ومخرجٌand an exit ودخولُand entry
The bells questioned me: do you have a path,
How can it be saved? Its deliverance and path?
and a guide, an exit, and entry?
And it showed me hosted by the prophet
وإذاand when أجهشَburst into tears المحبّونَthe lovers شوقاًwith longing
ولِفَرْطِand because of the excess of الغيابِabsence.. جاءَcame الرسولُthe Messenger
And when the lovers burst into tears of longing,
With the endless horizon upon my sight.
and, because absence was so immense, the Messenger came.
His lights shone upon me, and the sun rose
عَمِيتْwent blind قَبْلَهُbefore him القلوبُthe hearts اللواتيthat
فارَقَتْهاleft them مَحَجَّةٌa clear path وعُقولُand minds
Before him, the hearts had gone blind—those
From a face...and its breeze is fragrant.
from which the clear way and reason had departed.
No questions, for that is Mount Kab’s riders,
وَرَبَتْand swelled بالحَرامِthrough the forbidden أَعْمارُthe lifetimes قَومٍof a people..
وتَفانَتْand perished utterly قبائلٌtribes ونُصولُand blades
And a people's lives swelled through the unlawful,
And those who seek the beloved are swift.
and tribes and blades perished utterly.
The passionate lover bewildered in absence
شَخَصَتْstared fixedly تسألُasking السماءَthe sky عيونٌeyes
كيفhow تنجوcan they be saved؟ خلاصُهاtheir salvation والسبيلُand the way
Eyes stared upward, questioning the sky:
May be pitied, and the rejected boy.
How can they be saved? Their deliverance, and the way.
So he went seeking splendor with words;
وأرانيand I see myself عندَin the presence of النبيِّthe Prophet نزيلاًa guest
وعلىand upon ناظريmy gaze المدىthe expanse المسبولُdraped
And I see myself a guest before the Prophet,
For forgiveness is only accepted from Him.
and upon my gaze lies the draped expanse.
And poetry flowed like clear rain,
طالعتنيappeared before me أضواؤهhis lights، وتعالتْand rose high
شمسُthe sun وَجهٍof a face.. وريحُهاand its breeze مشمولُcooled by the north wind
His lights appeared before me, and rose high
And with poetry every state changes.
the sun of a face, its breeze cooled by the north wind.
He wore the beloved's cloak beautifully,
لاno سؤالٌquestion، فذاكَfor that is كعبٌKa'b بِرَكْبٍwith a caravan
والذيand the one who يَقصدُseeks الحبيبَthe beloved عَجولُhasty
No question—that is Ka'b with a caravan,
And the stature of the ode in it is beautiful.
and whoever seeks the beloved is in haste.
So wait O Kab, I am with Him
جَوِيَlanguished العاشقُthe lover المُوَلَّهُenraptured فيin البُعْدِseparation
وقدand perhaps يُرْحَمُis shown mercy الفتىthe young man المعذولُreproached
The enraptured lover languished in separation,
While my heart is intoxicated with love...
and the reproached young man may be shown mercy.
I am with the One whose equal in glory
فمضىso he went يقصدُseeking البهاءَsplendor بقَوْلٍwith words
إنماonly العفوُpardon عندَهin his presence مقبولُaccepted
So he went, seeking splendor with words:
Is a rose, a scythe and a palm tree.
Only pardon is accepted in his presence.
The opposites do not live except through Him-
وهَمَىand poured الشِّعرُpoetry مثلَlike غَيثٍrain صريحٍpure
ومعand with الشِّعرِpoetry كلُّevery حالٍstate تَحولُchanges
And poetry poured like pure rain,
A bitter food or a meal consumed.
and with poetry every state is transformed.
The forest of existence has poured gardens
وارتدىand he donned بُردةَthe mantle الحبيبِof the beloved جميلاًin beauty
وقَوامُand the form القصيدِof the poem فيهاwithin it جميلُbeautiful
And he donned the beloved's mantle in beauty,
And the howling wolves have bonded with it.
and within it the poem's form is beautiful.
O prophet of eras, my excuse is that
فتمهَّلso slow down ياO كعبُKa'b، إنّيindeed I لديهِam with him
وفؤاديand my heart منfrom الهوىlove متبولُravaged by love..
So slow down, Ka'b: I am with him,
My fluttering is burdened and my words are shy.
and my heart is ravaged by love.
Upon my chest are salutations to Mary
أناI عندَam with الذيthe one who تساوىbecame equal بفِكْرٍthrough thought
منهُfrom him وردٌroses ومِنْجلٌand a sickle ونَخيلُand palm trees
I am with him, in whose thought stand equal
And the virgin illuminates my forehead.
roses, a sickle, and palm trees.
The Family of the Prophet are a fountain of light
لاnot يعيشُlive الضدّانthe two opposites إلّاexcept عليهِon him
آكِلٌan eater مَرَّpassed by أوor مضىwent on مأكولُone eaten
The two opposites live only through him:
Whose spirits are Euphrates and Nile.
an eater passed by, or one eaten passed on.
I came while Jerusalem is a star on my forehead,
غابةُthe forest الكونِof the universe قدhas أفاضَتْpoured forth جِناناًgardens
وتآخَتْand became kin معwith الذئابِthe wolves الوعولُthe ibexes
The universe's forest has poured forth gardens,
I came while the wound is where the Messenger ascended.
and the ibexes became kin to the wolves.
So the only path is Badr's ascension;
ياO نبيَّProphet الأزمانِof the ages عُذْريmy excuse بأنّيis that I
خافقيmy beating heart مُثْقَلٌburdened وحَرْفيand my letter خجولُshy
O Prophet of the ages, my excuse is that
It is my Jerusalem...and the rest are superfluities.
my heart is burdened, and my letter is shy.
He passed...and lightning is a flash from his hands,
فوقَupon صدريmy breast لِمَريمٍfor Mary صلواتٌprayers
وعلىand upon مُهجتيmy heart's core تُضِيءُshines البَتولُthe Virgin
Upon my breast are prayers for Mary,
He flew...and thunder is baffled and awed.
and upon my heart's core the Virgin shines.
Then he prayed with the prophets as imam,
آلُthe family بيتِof the house النبيِّof the Prophet دوحةُa great tree نورٍof light
فَيْضُthe outpouring أرواحِهمof their souls فُراتٌEuphrates وَنِيلُand Nile
The Prophet's household is a great tree of light;
It is Jerusalem, his home and descent.
their souls' outpouring is Euphrates and Nile.
And if he returns the domes are sunrises
جئتُI came والقدسُand Jerusalem نجمةٌa star فيin جبينيmy brow
جئتُI came والجُرحُand the wound حيثُwhere أسرَىtraveled by night الرسولُthe Messenger
I came, with Jerusalem a star in my brow;
And the lasting spring in it is seasons.
I came, and the wound lies where the Messenger journeyed by night.
And if Quraysh denied a gazelle
فالطريقُfor the path الوحيدُonly معراجُthe ascent بَدْرٍof a full moon
هيit قدسيmy Jerusalem.. والباقياتُand the rest فُضولُexcess
For the only path is a full moon's ascent;
That roamed in the soul, his languid glance blinked.
it is my Jerusalem, and the rest is excess.
The rose of fire in my blood is pride
مرَّhe passed.. والبرقُand lightning وَمْضةٌa flash منfrom يديهِhis hands
طارَhe flew.. والرّعدُand thunder خاشعٌhumbled مذهولُastounded
He passed, and lightning was a flash from his hands;
And the lamps in my veins flow.
he flew, and thunder was humbled and astounded.
I came while Jerusalem is a star on my forehead,
ثمthen صَلّىhe prayed بالأنبياءِwith the prophets إماماًas prayer leader
إنّهاindeed it is القدسُJerusalem بيتُهhis home والنزولُand lodging
Then he led the prophets in prayer,
I came while the wound is where the Messenger ascended.
it is Jerusalem—his home and his lodging.
So the only path is Badr's ascension;
وإذاand when عادَhe returns فالقِبابُthen the domes شروقٌsunrise
والربيعُand the spring المديدُlong-lasting فيهاwithin it فُصولُseasons
And when he returns, the domes are sunrise,
It is my Jerusalem...and the rest are superfluities.
and the long spring within it is seasons.
وإذاand when أنْكَرَتْrejects قُريشٌQuraysh غزالاًa gazelle
ساحَwandered فيthrough الرّوحِthe soul رِمْشُهُits lash المَكْحولُkohl-darkened
And when Quraysh rejects a gazelle,
its kohl-darkened lash wanders through the soul.
وردةُthe rose النارِof fire فيin دَميmy blood كبرياءٌpride
والقناديلُand the lanterns فيin وَريديmy vein تَسيلُflow
The rose of fire in my blood is pride,
and the lanterns flow through my vein.
