Tell Ḍubayʿah, its grown men and its children:

And war throws men about and bites them.

The enemy are coming against you with a vast, massed host,

Enraged—unless you maul them, you will be mauled.

Better than the men who defy their commander

are the women who stay seated—O my people, be ashamed!

I never cease to fend off a spiteful enemy from you,

who has almost spewed venom in his rage.

Do you think they denied Ḥanīfah their due,

after the guarantee and firm assurances—or have they forgotten?

They did not know that, fearing disgrace, he had walked

with his sword toward death—Bayhas, son of Badrah.
